Abstract :
The objectives of thesis entitled The Concept of Mothering Role in Rita Dove's Poems Collected in Mother Love is to solely analyze the concept of mothering role in Rita Dove's poems collected in Mother Love. In finding the data, library research including internet browsing is done. The data consists of the ideas related to the concept of mothering role in Rita Dove's poems collected in Mother Love. Those poems are "Persephone Abducted","Statistic: The Witness?,?Mother Love?,?Demeter Mourning", "Demeter's Prayer to Hades?,"Persephone,Falling?, and ?Demeter Waiting". The data are analyzed descriptively using structural approach, psychological approach, and sociological approach. In those poems, the concept of mothering role is in the form of nurturing,caring for, and educating. Nurturing is three folds, namely, feeding, putting to sleep, and dressing. Caring for is in seven forms, that is,accompanying,feeling emphatic (mourning), doing hard duty happily, expecting good things (loving others and living gloriously), acting wisely and bravely, saving, and making peace. Moreover, educating is also in seven, namely, teaching to focus and pray,teaching to be responsible, teaching to know the limit, teaching to have faith and action,teaching to tolerate by accepting destiny, teaching to be confident and optimistic, and teaching to be on the right track and to stay alert.
