Abstract :
This thesis deals with the characters and the social condition in order to understand the social criticism in D.H. Lawrence's The Virgin and the Gipsy.The social condition is the reflection of the social condition in England in the early twentieth century. The objectives of the research entitled Social Criticism towards British Society inthe Early Twentieth Century in D.H Lawrence The Virgin and the Gipsy are (1) To analyze the character of Cynthia, of the rector, of Aunt Cissie, of Yvette and of the gipsy Joe Boswell, (2) To describe the social condition of the British society in the early twentieth century represented by the character of Cynthia,of The rector, of Aunt Cissie, of Yvette and of the gipsy Joe Boswell,and (3) To understand the social criticism implied in the characters. The method of research applied in this thesis is library research. In order to get the data, there are two sources used. They are in the form of dialogue or narrative based on the novel which can be words, phrases, clauses and even discourses and some books on theory of literature, theory of sociology, theory critical approach of literature,and the twentieth century history of Britain that refer to Social Criticism towards British Society in the Early Twentieth Century in D.H.Lawrence The Virgin and the Gipsy. Sociocultural-historical approaches are applied in this research. It is useful to find out the information about the social condition of the novel and to compare it with social condition in England. The analysis is divided into three subchapters. The first subchapter discusses of the character of Cynthia, of the rector, of Aunt Cissie, of Yvette and of the gipsy Joe Boswell. The second subchapter discusses four characteristic of the social condition in England in the early twentieth century depicted in the novel. They are the existence of class distinction, the rise of the bourgeoisie, the loss of the noble's power, and the influence of position to social status. The third subchapter discusses the social criticism implied in the novel. Through characters,this study figures out that the novel The Virgin and the Gipsy is used by the author to share his understanding of the Briish society in the early twentieth century.
