Abstract :
This thesis focuses on the rendering of English noun phrases into Indonesian. In this research, the researcher formulates two problems: (1) how are English noun phrases rendered into Indonesian in terms of their structure and (2) how are those noun phrases rendered into Indonesian in terms of their meaning. In conducting this research, the researcher applies descriptive method to collect and analyze the data. The data are taken from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and its translation Harry Potter dan Orde Phoenik. In terms of their structure, English noun phrases may be rendered into various kinds of linguistic units in Indonesian, such as a phrese, an adjective, an adverb, a noun or a compound word. Meanwhile, in terma of their meaning,English noun phrases may be translated literally or figuratively into Indonesian. The data analysis shows that in terms of their structure, 12 English noun phrases (21,05%) are rendered into noun phrases in Indonesian with the same pattern H - M; 38 English noun phrases (66,66%) are rendered into noun phrases in Indonesian with different pattern; one English noun phrase (1,75%) is rendered into adjective in Indonesian; one English noun phrase (1,75%) is rendered into adverb in Indonesian; one English noun phrase (1,75%) is rendered into compound word in Indonesian and 4 English noun phrases (7,01%) are rendered into nouns in Indonesian. Furthermore, in terms of their meaning, 55English noun phrases (96,5%) are translated into Indonesian literally and 2English noun phrases (3,5%) are franslated into Indonesian figuratively.
