Abstract :
Almost all of English sentences generally use grammatical cohesive devices. It has the purpose to make the sentences coherent and not monotonous.
Due to the topic of the discussion, the two problems which are analyzed, the types of grammatical cohesive devices used in Graham Greene's The End of the Affair and the ways of realizing those cohesive devices in the novel.
In this discussion, the researcher uses Descriptive Method because it is considered as the most appropriate method in relation to the problem of this discussion. This method uses some steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. In fact, the population of this discussion is more than 1000 words which are too large in number to analyze. Therefore, to analyze all of the data one by one is impossible. So that, the study applies random sampling
The result of this discussion shows that there are so many kinds of grammatical cohesive devices. Those grammatical cohesive devices consist of four main types. They are references, substitutions, ellipses, and conjunctions. Each type of those grammatical cohesive devices also consists of many sub-types. In English sentences, reference gives much contribution. After that, ellipsis is the second rank, followed by conjunction. The last and the less of occurrence is substitution. Besides, the use of grammatical cohesive devices in the sentences could be realized in many ways.
