Abstract :
The objectives of the study entitled An Analysis of Heroism in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath are (1) to describe Tom Joad's heroic behaviors (2) to analyze the influence of Tom Joad's behaviors toward his family.The writer applies the library research including Internet browsing in collecting data.The data are analyzed descriptively using the psychological approach and sociological approach. The conceptual models are used to find the data in the novel. The data corpus is in the forms of words, phrases, clauses, and discourses that refer to the heroism in Tom Joad's characters in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath published by Bantam Books in New York in 1939. Tom Joad, the main character in The Grapes of Wrath is characterized as a hero. Firstly, it can be seen from his bravery to murder for self-defending.Secondly, he has bravery to decide to live in California and to face a big risk.Thirdly, his heroism can be seen from his reaction. He is a strong man who helps Casy in defending the rights of starving people. He is optimistic that he will be able to carry on Casy's mission to make social reform although he must leave his family. Tom Joad's heroic behaviors bring some effects on his family. His family suffers from oppression,anxiety, disappointment, and frustration. Besides,his heroic behaviors cause some family members are killed.
