Abstract :
This research discusses taboo terms in Candace Bushnell's Sex and the City.The researcher finds three problems to discuss in this research, namely: the kinds of taboo terms, the purposes of using taboo terms, and the users of taboo terms. The novel of Candace Bushnell entitled Sex and the City is the source of data of this research. There are many taboo terms found in the novel. Thus, this novel is an source of data. The researcher uss descriptive method to analyze the data because the method is considered the most appropriate one to conduct this research. The researcher collects the data,classifies, and analyzes them. Finally, the researcher withdraws the conclusion as the result of the analysis. The result of the analysis is as follows: 60 data containing taboo terms which belong to mother- in-law term 9 data, sex term 20 data, death term 5 data, excretion term 11 data, and bodily function term15 data. Moreover, the using of taboo terms have various kinds of purposes. Consequently, 28 data represent categories of speech acts,namely: representatives 13 data, directives 1 data, commissives 1 data, and expressives 13 data. Concerning with the users of taboo terms, it results 29 data comprising 16 data of taboo terms used by characters in entertainment field, 6 data of taboo terms used by characters in media field, and 17 data of taboo terms used by characters in business field.
