Abstract :
Generally, the English word is formed by the smallest meaningful unit part of utterance which is called morpheme. There are two kinds of morphemes.They are bound morphemes and free morphemes. Bound morphemes use affixes -prefix or suffix. The English adjective formation can be formed by the addition of noun or verb. This process can create such kinds of meaning. Hence, in this research the researcher wants to know the meanings of those adjectival suffixes which formed by the addition of noun and verb. In this research, the researcher used descriptive method because this method is regarded more suitable with the problems of this research. This method is used with some steps : collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. While the data of this research are the kinds of the adjectival suffixes used in Lilian Peake's Promise at Midnight novel. In doing the research, the researcher does not use any sample because all of the data, that is, 98 words in 73 sentences are still possible to be analyzed one by one. The result of this research is that some of the problems are not found in the data,such as,-esque,-ory/-tory/-atory, and -ar. Moreover the percentage of the use of adjectival suffixes is as follows : suffix -ful 5 (5,10%),suffix ly.10(10,20%)suffix -less 4(4,8%), suffix -able/-ible 9 (9,18%), -suffix -like 2(2,04%), suffix-ish 1 (1,02%), suffix-ant/-ent 3 (3,06%),suffix-ate 1 (1,02%),suffix -ed 26 (26,53%), suffix-ing 10(10,20%),suffix-ic 2(2,04%),suffix-en 2(2,04%) suffix -ary (1,02%), suffix-al 8 (8,16%), suffix -y.6 (6,12%), suffix-ive 2 (304%), and suffix -ous 6 (6,12%).
