Abstract :
This thesis entitled Study of Persona Concept on Di. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in Robert Loius Stevenson's The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This novel is first published in 1886. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is one of popular classic because it touches the readers and many motion picture and television adaptations.
The writer's reason in analyzing The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is due to the problem that is experienced by Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the main character in Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.The story talks about the hypocrisy of the Victorian period through main character,Dr. Jekyll who in his life gets conflict with his dual nature. Based upon the dual nature of single man representing good and bad side, the story reveals Dr. Jekyli's hypocrisy because of demanded by the society. The persona slowly appears in his life. Dr.Jekyll has to act his good performance in front of public. He tries to hide the badness of his others side and show the goodness of him. While, the opposite side of Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde has to keep Dr. Jekyll to do his pleasure that he has never done before. Mr. Hyde has to cover Dr. Jekyll to save his reputation as a good scientist.The wvriter is also looking the behavior of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde based on their personality. Dr. Jekyll has overt behavior because of his kindness that he shows to the society. Mr. Hyde has covert behavior because he hides identity of himself. The society does not know that Mr. Hyde is Dr. Jekyll.
In this writing, the writer takes the main source of the data from the novel entitled The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde written by Robert Louis Stevenson, and by collecting some data and other reference in order to support this thesis. The writer uses the literary theory, namely; novel, the meaning of character and characterization, main character, and society in the Victorian period and the psychoanalysis theory; persona concept, hypocrisy, covert and overt behavior that theories can help the writer in understanding to mental condition of Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde.
