Abstract :
This research discusses the translation of taboo terms in Candace Bushnell's Sex and the City. In this thesis, the researcher wants to study more about it by analyzing the translation of taboo terms from English into Indonesian due to their meaning and dynamics, and also the degree of fidelity of the translation of taboo terms in Candace Bushnell's novel. The source of the data used in this research is Candace Bushnell's novel entitled Sex and the City and its Indonesian rendering translated by Amelia Listiani. In this novel, the author states many taboo terms that are rarely found in other literary works. Since the focus of this research is the translation of taboo terms, it is a valid source of the data. The kind of research used is descriptive method. In doing the research, the researcher collects the data after reading the content of the novel. Then, the researcher classifies the data and analyzes them. At last, the researcher makes a conclusion based on the results of the analysis. The results of the study are 77,1% data keep the original meaning of the English taboo terms in the rendering, and only 22,9% data lose it. Moreover, the researcher finds that there are only 37,1% data maintain the dynamic of the original in the translation, while the other 62,9% data reduce it. Then, based on the analysis on the degree of the fidelity of the translation of taboo term, it results 62,9% data reaching the high level of fidelity, 14,2% data belonging to the mid level of fidelity, and 22,9% data obtaining the low level of fidelity.
