Abstract :
This study intended to answer the following research questions: (1) what terms of address are mostly used by the main character in Mira W.'s "Cinta di Awal Tiga
Puluh "; (2) what are the underlying reasons for the main character to use these terms of address in different situation? To answer those questions, the writer relied on two theoretical frameworks. They were sociolinguistics and literature. As sociolinguistics was the main focus in
this study, the writer specifically based this on the theory according to Kaswati Purwa.
In view that the object of this study is Mira W.'s novel 'Cinta di A wal Tiga Puluh' the first step of data collecting procedures was one straight through reading to
get a detailed understanding of the terms of address used by the main character to refer to herself. The writer, then, reread the novel. The writer, at last, quoted all
Anggraini1s terms of address to find the reasons.
Having collected the data, the writer found that terms cf address used to refer to herself were different, depending on the relationship with the addressee. Term of
address "aku" used by Anggraini showed that she had a close relationship with the addressee. Term of address "saya" used by Anggraini in her conversations with her mother and the doctor who handles her illness, could show the informal relationship, distance and respect among them. Meanwhile "mama" is used by Anggraini in the conversation in case of the family attributes and the close relationship showing
attention, affection, and honor.
Sociologically, all Anggraini's term of address based on her relationship with the addressee whether it was intimate address terms or less intimate.
