Abstract :
Many changes have been made in language teaching and learning process, especially in teaching and learning speaking. Unfortunately, the basic thing that is
still considered as the important one is to teach vocabulary and to teach structure by drilling and memorizing. The teachers neglect to conduct meaningful activities that can enable learners to apply their language knowledge and language skills, one of them speaking, in the actual communication. Drama is the best way in language teaching, particularly teaching speaking. There are some reasons why drama is important to be used in the language classroom. First, the language in drama is used very naturally. Second, drama is a good technique to motivate the students to perform and communicate in the target language in real situation. Third, drama activities can be used to engage students in the meaningful activities. Fourth, drama is a useful tool to encourage students to draw on their own personal experiences, feelings, and
opinion. There is an essential technique of teaching speaking using drama as the teaching material. First, establishing a relaxed atmosphere. Second, motivating
students to show their self-expression. Third, building the students' confidence. Fourth, selecting an appropriate play to discuss. Fifth, using the talk-and-listen system. Sixth, motivating students to get involved. Moreover, a teacher should notice the principles of designing or developing language teaching material. Material should be clearly linked with the curriculum, it should authentic in term
of text and task, it should stimulate interaction, and it should encourage learners to apply their developing language skills beyond the classroom. A Street Car Named Desire is a good example of a play to be developed as
teaching materials. It contains interesting topic, about human conflict, that is relevant to be used with the advanced students. Besides that, the language is not
complicated; it is used as natural as in daily conversation. Therefore, the writer suggests three examples of activities that are developed from the play, namely
'information gap', 'paraphrasing', and 'alibi'.
