Abstract :
We as human beings use language as a means of having interactions with other people. By using language, we can communicate with each other. Everything we say or think is then stated and understood through language. This
study concerns with meanings of what other people intend to say or communicate through text. The study under report deals with the Speech Act Theory. In details, the topic of the study is the language functions or illocutionary acts, according to Elizabeth Closs Traugott and Mary Louise Pratt, which are manifested in the Magic the Gathering collectible card game. This topic was chosen based on the
reason that the writer wants to show teaching Speech Act, especially illocutionary act and its illocutionary verbs in a different way. Based on the background, the study was done to answer the question: "What kinds of illocutionary acts and illocutionary verbs are manifested in the
Magic the Gathering?" In line with the research question, the objective of the study is to find out the kinds of illocutionary acts and their illocutionary verbs in
the text of the Magic the Gathering using Traugott's theory. The study is a qualitative exploratory-interpretative research study because the writer used a
non-experimental method, yielded qualitative data, and provided an interpretative analysis of that data. The data were obtained from the latest edition of the Magic
the Gathering at the moment of the study was held. The findings of the study showed that the two categories of the data: the main text and the flavor text have different kinds of language functions or illocutionary acts. In the main text, the writer only found two kinds of illocutionary acts: directive and representative.
While in the flavor text, the writer found expressive, verdictive, and declaration in addition of the directive and representative. The writer also found that there are
some texts which have more than one illocutionary act.
