External conflicts of Ueno Otoko in Kawabata's Beauty and Sadness

Abstract :
Conflict normally occurs when there is a problem between two people and usually before the climax of the conflict there are minor disagreements between the characters that led to the peak of the conflict. In Beauty and Sadness, the conflicts occurred between several main characters in the novel. In order to find significant information about the conflict of the novel, the writer has two research questions: What are the conflicts found in Otoko’s character as illustrated in the novel? What are the solutions of the conflicts? The method used in this study is Descriptive Qualitative Research. The writer reveals the external conflicts between the main characters by using paraphrasing and quoting certain scenes. Additionally, this research uses the objective theory that only focuses on the novel itself and does not pay attention on the opinion of the author or the reader. The data is collected from the translated version of Beauty and Sadness(The original version is in Japanese). Analysing the data started with the revelation of the intrinsic elements of the novel which are the plot, setting, and character, followed by the discovery of the external conflicts from Otoko’s perspective and lastly the resolutions for each conflicts. The result of the study came up with three major conflicts that the main character faced and three unique solutions to the three conflicts. This study acts as an enrichment in understanding conflicts in literature. This study is also expected to help future researchers to continue analyzing the novel, but using other approaches and using different angles.
