Abstract :
This research aims to find out the types of grammatical cohesive devices undergraduate students of Faculty of Language and Arts most frequently used in their background of the study sections of their theses and also to see how grammatical cohesion devices can help the readers to understand the context of background of the study sections written by undergraduate students of Faculty of Language and Arts. In this study, the writer used 10 background of the study sections of Faculty of Language and Arts as the object. The data areanalyzed using Halliday & Hasan‟s theory (1976). The analysis revealed that undergraduate students of Faculty of Language and Arts could produce grammatical cohesive devices. The majority of devices used by graduate students of Faculty of Language and Arts from batch 2016-2017 were conjunction and reference. In this analysis, it shows that the use of grammatical cohesion can help the writer to make the connectedness in the text and then help the readers to understand the context of the writing in background sections of thesis.
